Have you ever had peanut butter on a burger? If not take a trip to West Lafayette Indiana and eat at Tripple XXX.

The Duane Purvis All American is a 1/4lb. chop steak, thick, creamy peanut butter (I think it is JIF), American cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle & onion on a toasty sesame bun. This is one of the signature burgers featured on the Food Network show “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Drives”.  This was one of the strangest burgers I have ever had.  I was prepared for this to be really bad.  Surprisingly, this burger was pretty good.

This is just one of the signature items featured when Triple D visited Triple XXX.  This restaurant is the oldest drive-in restaurant in Indiana.  Today, the last iconic Triple XXX Thirst Station remains in West Lafayette, Indiana, where it’s been on the hill, but on the level, since 1929. Just steps from the campus of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, you can’t help but notice the Triple XXX on the hill in Chauncey Village.

My wife and daughter split a traditional cheeseburger and onion rings.  My oldest son and I split the Duane Purvis with French Fires.  We all had root beer or root beer floats.  All of this was cooked absolutely perfect.  The burgers had a good crust, the bread was fabulous.  My wife loved the onion rings and the floats.

The Name

Triple XXX comes from the restaurant’s origins as a Triple XXX Thirst Stop.  These were the home Triple XXX Root Beer in the 30’s.  The Triple XXX Family Restaurant name change reflected that it was no longer just a thirst station. The diner’s tagline, “We were here before your mother was born” isn’t just lip service. Ask almost any regular who sits along the winding countertop how long they’ve been coming in and ordering the Breakfast Special, or Duane Purvis, and you’ll hear some great stories that span generations.

Purdue was what brought us to West Lafayette, my son wanted to visit as he is looking at colleges to attend.  We did the campus tour and the information session with the college of engineering.  All of this is really cool.  You get to hear the history of Purdue and all about all the astronauts that have graduated from Purdue (Gus Grissom and Neil Armstrong to name a few).  Also, on the tour, you will see an Apollo capsule and some really cool fountains.

If you are in North Indiana I would recommend lunch or dinner at Triple XXX and taking the tour of Purdue University.  They are both American classics that you need to visit.

You can read about another adventure on our college road trip here.

  1. You have me convinced to give peanut butter on a burger a try!

If you’re ever in Cleveland, stop by Happy Dog! You can get Fruit Loops on your hot dog there and that’s just one a list of off the wall topping
    possibilities!
