Our local Lowes Food Store just completed a major remodel. In this new remodel store is a Lowes food Beer Den where you can get advice on beer and sample several selections on tap. Last Saturday was the first chance I had to give it a try. This is the first grocery store in our area to offer beer in 32 and 64 once growlers. I must say that this is a unique way to buy beer.
I got a 32 oz growler of Highlad Brewing Company’s Lost Cove Pale Ale. This aromatic American Pale Ale is a sessional beer handcrafted with a unique Highland twist. Discover the secrets of Lost Cove in a summery American pale ale inspired by the spirit of Appalachia’s past. Delicate Pilsner malt blends with Cascade Hops for a hop-forward, cold-fermented ale with a citrusy aroma and crisp, clean finish. It has a pale yellow color with a somewhat fizzy white head that disappears after a minute or two. The aromas of biscuity malts, grassy and lemony hops, floral, hay really show the summertime in this beer. This is well balanced between light hops and biscuity pilsner malts. This puts it somewhere between a hoppy cream ale and a pilsner. Lost cove has a very good mouthfeel for this kind of beer – smooth and crisp, with plenty of carbonation to prickle the tongue.
Lost Cove, like Highland’s other seasonal beers, is named for a feature of the Southern Appalachian landscape.

This is a light and fruity Pinot Noir. The fruit is forward in this wine. That fruit is followed up by earthy tones that highlight the fruit to the palate. Candoni Pinot Noir is a dry elegant wine with good balance and structure. Red and black currents highlight the bouquet with undertones of vanilla. Hidden deep in this bouquet is also a just a hint of oak. Candoni Pinot Noir is a ruby red color that that is even throughout the glass. It resembles young black berries before they ripen.
Candoni is a brand of wines from Arel Group, produced in Italy. The Candoni family has a rich history of wine production dating back at least 150 years. The wines are classic Italian favorites such as Chianti, Pinot Grigio, Moscato, Prosecco as well as Merlot and Pinot Noir. The eye-catching labels feature recreations of ancient Roman images to depict the idea of tradition and respect for history.
This pinot pairs well with several foods. The best choice to reveal the wine’s delic ate flavors and bouquet are grilled fish such as tuna or salmon, as for red meat roasted lamb goes well and dishes with mushroom flavor also pair well.
Another unique feature of Candoni wine are the unique labels. The bottles are silk-screened with painted labels. This adds to the elegance of the bottles and aids in setting up an eye catching presentation for your guest.
This wine is produced in the Lombardi region of North center Italy. Lombardy is bordered by Switzerland and by the Italian regions of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol and Veneto (east), Emilia-Romagna (south), and Piedmont (west). Three distinct natural zones can be fairly easily distinguished in the Lombardy region: mountains, hills and plains – the latter being divided in Alta (high plains) and Bassa (low plains).
The most important mountainous area is an Alpine zone including the Lepontine and Rhaetian Alps, (Piz Bernina – La Spedla, 4,020 m), the Bergamo Alps, the Ortler Alps and the Adamello massif; it is followed by an Alpine foothills zone Prealpi, which include the main peaks are the Grigna Group (2,410 m), Resegone (1,875 m) and Presolana (2,521 m).
The climate of this region is continental, though with variations depending on altitude or the presence of inland waters. The continental nature of the climate is more accentuated on the plains, with high annual temperature changes (at Milan an average January temperature is 1.5 °C (35 °F) and 24 °C (75 °F) in July), and thick fog between October and February. The Alpine foothills lakes exercise a mitigating influence, permitting the cultivation of typically Mediterranean produce (olives, citrus fruit).
