First, let me say a big thank you to Deschutes Brewing for inviting me to a virtual tasting of its new “Fresh Family” of beers and sending me a variety pack of the Fresh Family for the tasting. Over the last pandemic year, I have really begun to enjoy IPA much more than I did before. I guess I have grown and finally found some that suites me. This family of beers may have completed my transition to a fan of the IPA style.
The Fresh Family
Is all about the hop flavor. This group of IPA-style beers is showing off the flavor of hops from the Pacific Northwest. Deschutes uses a balanced bitterness as the supporting effort in these beers. The Fresh family is made up of six beers. I got to taste three beers from this family.
- Fresh Squeezed IPA
- Fresh Haze IPA
- Lil Squeezy Pale
- Squeezy Rider IPA
- Haze Tron IPA
- Royal Fresh IPA
The Hops of Fresh Family
Deschutes Brewery works closely with hop breeding programs in Washington and Oregon. This cooperation brings top-quality hops to the brewery. This started with Fresh Squeezed IPA featuring CitraTM Hops. This variety of hops produces an aroma of fresh-squeezed orange juice. For the Squeezy Rider IPA, Deschutes brews with StrataTM hops. This variety developed by Indie Hops and Oregon State University brings big tropical citrus flavor.
Fresh Squeezed IPA from the Fresh Family
Fresh Squeezed IPA pours clear, bright coppery, crimson coloring, large, lasting head, looking several kinds of great. To the nose, you get every kind of citrus note imaginable. There is lemon and orange and lime, and grapefruit, mango tangerine, and a slice of pineapple on the side.
The flavors of juicy pink grapefruit, caramel sweetness, pine, and a touch of pepper; very tasty and quite refreshing.
“Savor every last drop of tropical refreshment with this juicy blend of citrusy hops balanced by a lively malt body”
This is a really great IPA. Fresh Squeezed strikes the right balance between hops and malt.

Lil Squeezy Juicy Pale from the Fresh Family
Lil Squeezy pours hazy with a golden-orange color. Poured into a pint glass the beer generated half a finger of head. The foam was made up of larger bubbles. The head faded quickly.
Lil Squeezy has a nice lemon flavor with a touch of tangerine in it. This flavor appears at the beginning of the sip and persists to the end. There is a slight bit of grain flavor to the beer and a touch of pine in the middle to the back of the palate. It feels clean with a nice bitterness and good carbonation. Drinkability is very high. The body is light and pretty crisp. It feels like a quality beer.
“Deschutes Brewery has a new hazy IPA in 12oz cans called Lil’ Squeezy Juicy Ale, but what makes this one especially unique is it’s a “Gluten Reduced” beer. Think of Lil’ Squeezy as the younger, more health conscious kid brother/sister of Fresh Haze IPA.
Deschutes Brewery adds Brewers Clarex, an enzyme that breaks down the specific gluten protein found in beer.
Deschutes says they test every gluten-reduced beer in their state-of-the-art lab to ensure that it has less than 20 ppm of gluten.
The brewers notes on this beer say: Refreshingly juicy. Effortlessly drinkable. Freshly Squeezed. No fruit was harmed in the making of this beer.”
It’s a nice solid beer. I’d be pleased to drink it again, especially during a cookout or hanging out at the pool this summer. The beer has a very nice citrus character which is pleasant. The can states that “No fruit was harmed in the making of this beer.” They did a very good job of delivering fruit character.

Squeezy Rider IPA from the Fresh Family
Poured into a pint glass, Squeezy Rider pours a slightly cloudy, pale, light to medium orange color with a soft white head. Upfront the aroma is mild to moderate resinous orange/tangerine aromas that fade quickly, and it turns into a very peachy aroma. Somewhat tropical.
The flavor follows with light to moderate flavors of resinous tangerine before it falls into the heavy and juicy peach body. Juicy. It finishes resinous but doesn’t detect much pine, citrus, nor bitterness. Finishes juicy with a mild peach pith bitterness. Medium to heavier bodied. Moderate carbonation. Feels heavy, but also somewhat soft on the palate.
“Chill out with this juicy refresher that’s packed with heaps of hops to bring torrential tides of tropical flavor and a dab of dankness.
Big tropical fruit punch aroma, light dank, and melon paired with clean, light malt character. Hop and yeast-driven fruity sweetness balanced with a bitterness that is laid back, leaving you care-less about IBU’s.
This is my favorite of the Fresh Family. In fact, this beer is making a run at becoming my favorite IPA. The hops really the star of this beer and I really liked the tropical fruits being the supporting role. I am looking forward to relaxing in to pool this summer with this beer.
